I could see the details in his irises and count the lashes above them. I almost touched my chest to his with every single inhaleâFinn lingered far too close, and the worst part was? For all that my head swam, Finn seemed unaffected. His eyes were still clear, his mouth tilted in a slight frown, and there was not a hint of anxiety in his stance.
Finn stepped back from me and regarded the room the moment the door behind us swung shut. His initial step away from me left me floundering, my mouth open as I stared at where he once stood, reminding myself again of an intrinsic factâFinn was fae, and therefore naturally enticing. Thus was the largest problem between the two of us.
I could hardly breathe, stuck in the memory of his eyes on mine and his warm breath across my lips.
Fae. Fae, fae, fae. Naturally pretty, naturally charming. Despite knowing that, I still wanted to sink to the ground and touch the skin of my lips, absorbing the fact that he had been so close. Were all fae like Finn? I could hear my heartbeat echo in my ears. People in Whynne must have been used to beings like him, but me?
âYou need to get away from the door,â Finn declared. Before I knew it, he was pulling me along without a second thought, obviously not as affected by the momentary lack of distance as I was. Somehow that was disappointing. âIf anyone comes in here, you will be found, especially if you stand there.â
For some reason, I felt like Finn was talking about more than the Eigens outside.
I found myself shaking my head to knock myself out of my confusion as Finn released me near the desk, throwing a look towards it with his own questions evident in his eyes. Whatever they were, Finn left them unspoken.
Instead, Finn flinched at the sound of a heavy thump above, obviously knowing what it meant and picturing the long, thick planks thrown between the boats as the Eigens began to board. You could hear the thunder of footsteps above us as the crew ran to the sides; whether to fight or spectate, I did not know.
ââIn here!â Finn stated, spinning me into a thick cabinet near Nikkoâs desk with his hand pressed against my mouth. Finnâs eyes gleamed with satisfaction as I let myself be moved by him without resistance, pinned up against the wall with his hand pressed to my mouth. His other hand caught the back of my head before it thumped against the wood, and his chest pressed closely against my head as we stood near each other once more.
So near that his scent filled my lungs.
Panic rose within me and yet I could not further argue with Finn, not when he bent down so that his forehead pressed against mine, his thumb smoothing across my lips.
âI cannot do illusionary magic,â Finn explained, as if that was a question anywhere near the forefront of my mind. âWind and wind alone, I am not Unseelie.
